Transition Year in Spain

A Complete Spanish Immersion

The Irish student is fully integrated among Spanish students and follows all subjects through Spanish.

The Spanish Curriculum offers a wide range of subjects which vary from school to school.

The individual placement dramatically improves the student’s fluency and becomes an asset for the Leaving Cert exam.

Our 45 years of experience shows that Irish students are upgraded in their Spanish classes upon their return to Ireland.

Keys to a Successful Stay in Spain

  • A Preliminary Interview and an Information Meeting  are essential to better understand students’ expectations. Studying Spanish in the country is a challenge  and is a very efficient way to acquire Spanish language skills.
  • Families are chosen by our Local Contact in Spain in conjunction with the Spanish schools. Before departure to Spain, the student must sit a Complete Test to evaluate starting level in Spanish.
  • Living Language organizes a Preparatory Course before departure, which gives the student a head start in speech, communication skills and preparation for immersion in the Spanish school. This intensive preparation will reinforce the basics of the Spanish language and will give the student tools to actively participate in class (homework in Spanish, phonetics, vocabulary and grammar).
  • Weekly visits, with tuition, by the Local Representative help the Irish student with homework as well as providing emotional and practical support.

Arrival in Spain

On arrival in Spain, students are welcomed by the Local Contact and accompanied to their Host Family.

The Local Contact ensures the harmonious integration in the Spanish family and school. During the weekly visit of the Local Contact, students are helped with homework (phonetic work, grammar, vocabulary…) as well as receiving emotional and practical support.

At School

Students attend a  regular Spanish Secondary School : colegio. They share the same timetable and subjects as Spanish students. Although this experience can seem intimidating at first, Irish students enjoy their stay, make new friends and mature considerably.

Students in Spain study a wide range of subjects which includes Arts, Humanities, Natural Sciences and Health, Science and Technology and Spanish. The other subjects that the Irish student will study during this language programme are, for example, Mathematics, Chemistry, History, English and Sport.

Excellent quality of education, care and ethics are the essential values of our Spanish schools.

Students must be attentive, respectful in class and and should take notes. You won’t have to do the same homework as the Spanish students, at least not at the beginning of the stay. For long-term immersion periods, it is strongly recommended to attempt the homework, once you feel well integrated and more comfortable in understanding the Spanish language. You share the same school experience as Spanish students (classes conducted in Spanish, sports and leisure activities etc.).

Our Spanish schools have been selected among the best in the “Galicia” region. The Spanish schools appreciate the success of these placements and often decide to send some of their own students on language programmes in France, Ireland and Germany  with Living Language.

At the Home of a Spanish Student

Each Irish student is placed individually with a Spanish family who has a teenager of similar age.

Families are chosen by the Local Contact in association with the Spanish schools.  The families are always very motivated to integrate the Irish student into their home and to ensure happy and beneficial experience.

This individual placement guarantees full immersion in Spanish language and culture.

The Irish student must participate in the daily life of the Spanish family in every aspect and live the differences with an open mind. We strongly recommend the student to participate in cultural and sports activities as suggested by the Spanish family. The more time spent with the family and the less time spent on screens/phones will contribute to a successful experience.

Location

Schools are located in the Galicia region, e.g Vigo, Pontevedra, Lugo, Santiago de Compostela and A Coruña

Avantages of the Transition Year Programme in Spain

Our “Colegio en España” programme is aimed at Transition Year students who wish to spend part or all the year at school in Spain.

In order to guarantee a successful immersion in Spain, an initial test as well as an information meeting help determine the Spanish School year and assess personal needs or requests.

The minimum stay in Spain is 5 weeks. A stay of 2 or more periods is also possible. The Irish  student  is  fully  integrated  among  Spanish students and family.

The Irish student is placed at the home of a Spanish student which ensures the progress in Spanish.

Regular visits with tuition by our Local Representative help the Irish student with homework, as well as providing emotional and practical support.
