Intensive 5th Year Course in France

How to Maximize Oral and Aural

This course is  designed  to  complement the  oral  section  of  the   Leaving  Cert  syllabus,  in   the  context  of  a  French  immersion.  It  gives  students  a  strong  foundation in communication skills (Oral and Aural).

2 Weeks at School (France)
1 Week Grammar (Dublin)

PRIOR TO DEPARTURE

A Test and a Workshop are held in Dublin to help determine the correct level.

A Portfolio is given to students for completion in France (Presentation, “Document” etc.) and help them with French sounds, pronunciation, intonation and  boost confidence.

Our 5th Year Intensive Programme

Organized in 2 separate blocks, the first part consists of 2 weeks in France attending a French Secondary School and living at the home of a local student.

On return to Ireland, a one-week intensive course is held in Dublin to consolidate progress in Grammar and Written French. The  course is taught by native teachers experienced in teaching the Leaving Cert syllabus and familiar with exam marking schemes.

iN FRANCE

  • The 5th Year student join a regular French Secondary school, where they are individually placed.
  • The Irish students attend all classes through French for 2 weeks.
  • This individual immersion dramatically improves fluency which becomes an asset for oral and written exams. The starting level in French is not critical and a final progress report is provided.
  • Regular weekly visits with private tuition by the French Local Contact help the student keep up with homework (Portfolio) and provides emotional support.
  • Accomodation with a French schoolmate ensures comfort, care and offers a wonderful opportunity to improve oral French in a real-life environment. As a representative of their family and country, students participate in family life. They are cooperative, courteous and they partake in  normal chores and duties.

Focus on the French Leaving Cert Oral & Aural

  • Higher and  Ordinary  Level French Oral and Aural components  :  45%  of  total    Students, who travel abroad for a minimum  of  2  weeks,  show  an increased  understanding  not  just of  the  language  but  also  of  the culture,  and  this  is  of  benefit  in every section of the paper.
  • Fluency in French bonus: Students also  find  the  speed  of the  speakers  on  the  SEC  CDs slower  than  the  speed  that  they have  become  accustomed  to while  abroad;  and  this  helps  to increase their listening mark.
  • At the LC oral exam, Candidates  are often  asked  about  differences between  life  in  Ireland  and  France,  or  to  contrast  the  school systems, the food or the culture. The 5th Year Intensive Course considerably enriches the knowledge of the French language.
  • Excellent pronunciation after the 5th Year Intensive Course
  • Better understanding of the French way of life
  • Better comprehension of vocabulary
  • Increased confidence in speaking the language and better fluency
  • An openness  to  the  idea  of  using  French  after  the  Leaving  Cert  (business, holidays, job…)
