Transition Year in Germany

Fluency and new Friendships

German is the second language taught in schools in the European Union after English. Learning and speaking German is a strategic language choice that allows the student to speak a second foreign language in addition to English and to have long-term European ambitions.

Our 45 years of experience show that our Irish students are upgraded in their German classes on returning to Ireland. Although a daunting experience at the start, Irish students enjoy their time, make new friends and mature a lot.

Keys to a Successful Stay in Germany

A Preliminary Interview and an Information Meeting  are essential to better understand students’ expectations. Studying German in the country is a challenge  and is a very efficient way to acquire German language skills.

Families are chosen by our Local Manager in Germany in conjunction with the German schools. Before departure to Germany, the student must sit a Complete Test to evaluate starting level in German.

Living Language organizes a Preparatory Course before departure, which gives the student a head start in speech, communication skills and preparation for immersion in the German school. This intensive preparation will reinforce the basics of the German language and will give the student tools to actively participate in class (homework in German, phonetics, vocabulary and grammar).

Weekly visits, with tuition, by the Local Representative help the Irish student with homework as well as providing emotional and practical support.

Arrival in Germany

On arrival in Germany,  the student are welcomed at the airport by their host families.

The Local Contact ensures the harmonious integration in the German family and school. During the weekly visit of the Local Contact, students are helped with homework (phonetic work, grammar, vocabulary) as well as receiving emotional and practical support.

At School

In Bavaria, students attend a regular German secondary school : Gymnasium. They share the same timetable as the German students. Classes normally start between 7:30am and 8:00am and finish between 1:00pm and 1:30pm. Classes last 45 minutes.

Students must be attentive, respectful in class and should take notes. During weekly visits, the student is helped by the Local Contact with homework, with some tasks assigned for backup (consisting mainly of a vocabulary book of new words explained through German).

At the Home of a German Student

Accommodation is at the home of a German student selected by the school; helping thus with integration. Sharing family life is a moment of conviviality. This offers the best way to learn about the German way of life and maximises the exposure of the Irish student to the German language. This immersion in Germany is the occasion to create memorable experiences.

The Irish student must participate int the daily life of the German family and live the differences with an open mind. We strongly recommend the student to participate in cultural and sports activities as suggested by the German family. The more time spent with the family and the less time spent on screens/phones will contribute to a successful experience.
